Varel was an Oldenburg semi-sovereign "Herrschaft" which was ruled by the Grafen von Aldenburg (1667 - 1733) and the Grafen von Bentinck (1733 - 1806/1818) respectively. These Grafen - who were as well the rulers of the sovereign Herrschadt Kyphausen (see church district Jever) - had a castle in Varel for which there was an extra parish register recorded. This  church was a Reformed. From 1818 on, the "Herrschaft" Varel was again (as before 1667) under undivided Oldenburg rule.
